Wulf Weinmann fundó Col Legno en 1982 con una premisa física: 'col legno' es la indicación de golpear las cuerdas con la madera del arco, no con las cerdas. El sello nació para registrar esa disonancia áspera de la vanguardia europea del siglo XX. El registro en vivo de Spiegel de Friedrich Cerha en 1989 demostró que la música contemporánea no era un ejercicio de pizarrón, sino una experiencia acústica física y abrumadora. Col Legno importa porque rescató el riesgo en una academia que se estaba volviendo cómoda, dándole un refugio al sonido disidente.
