Tam Henderson fundó el sello en San Francisco en 1976 con una premisa física: el sonido grabado tenía que respirar igual que en la sala de conciertos. Junto al ingeniero Keith O. Johnson, que diseñaba sus propios micrófonos y grabadores, convirtieron a Reference Recordings en la meca de los audiófilos. El disco *Professor Johnson’s Astounding Sound Show* de 1979 demostró que la fidelidad no era un truco técnico, sino una cuestión de respeto por el espacio. No buscaban la perfección estéril del estudio, sino capturar la verdad de la acústica viva.
