Matt Balitsaris fundó Palmetto en Nueva York en 1990 para editar sus propias grabaciones, pero terminó construyendo un refugio clave para el jazz contemporáneo más sobrio. Lejos de la pirotecnia comercial, el sello se convirtió en el hogar de pianistas como Fred Hersch y el recordado Frank Kimbrough, cuyo trío con Ben Allison y Matt Wilson en Lullabluebye (2004) define esa búsqueda de sutileza y espacio. Palmetto importa porque demostró que el post-bop neoyorquino no necesita gritar para ser profundo; la música acá se cocina a fuego lento.
