François Zalacain fundó Sunnyside en Nueva York en 1982, casi por accidente, tras dejar su carrera en IBM para editar *Mirth Song*, un álbum a dúo del pianista Harold Danko y el bajista Rufus Reid. El sello se convirtió en el hogar de músicos que buscaban libertad absoluta, operando sin contratos de exclusividad y permitiendo que los artistas retuvieran los derechos de sus masters. De Kirk Lightsey a Meredith d'Ambrosio, Sunnyside demostró que un catálogo de jazz contemporáneo puede sostenerse sobre la confianza mutua y el respeto por el espacio del creador.
