Creed Taylor fundó CTI en 1967 con una premisa clara: el jazz podía ser sofisticado y vender miles de copias. Al mudarse al estudio de Rudy Van Gelder en Nueva Jersey y sumar las fotos de Pete Turner para las tapas, el sello construyó una identidad propia. El éxito global de Prelude de Deodato en 1973 demostró que la fusión y el soul jazz no necesitaban concesiones para sonar en las radios. Importa porque probó que el género podía ser estéticamente impecable y comercialmente viable sin perder la soltura de la improvisación.
