Hank O’Neal dejó su puesto en la CIA para fundar Chiaroscuro en Nueva York en 1970, buscando rescatar el jazz clásico y el swing cuando el negocio ya miraba hacia el jazz fusión y el rock. Su primer lanzamiento, un disco de piano solista de Earl Hines, marcó el tono: grabaciones íntimas, portadas en blanco y negro por pura economía y un respeto absoluto por los veteranos. Chiaroscuro no buscaba inventar nada nuevo; importaba sostener un lenguaje que se estaba perdiendo, dándole espacio a los que todavía tenían mucho para tocar.
