Gene Russell fundó Black Jazz en Oakland en 1969 con una declaración política: el jazz era música negra y el sello debía ser su trinchera espiritual. En solo cuatro años y veinte discos, el catálogo definió el sonido del activismo de la época. El debut de Russell, New Direction en 1971, abrió la cancha para que Doug Carn, Calvin Keys y The Awakening cruzaran el soul-jazz con el funk de la Costa Oeste.
