Bernard Stollman fundó ESP-Disk en Nueva York en 1963 con una idea insólita: editar un disco en esperanto. El rumbo cambió cuando escuchó al saxofonista Albert Ayler en Greenwich Village. De ahí salió Spiritual Unity en 1965, el disco que definió la crudeza del free jazz. Stollman les daba control total a los músicos bajo una premisa clara: ellos decidían qué se grababa. Por su catálogo pasaron Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders y Patty Waters. Importa porque demostró que la vanguardia neoyorquina necesitaba un espacio sin filtros comerciales para poder existir.
