Los hermanos polacos Leonard y Phil Chess fundaron el sello en Chicago en 1950, después de manejar un club nocturno en el sur de la ciudad. Su gran acierto fue entender que los músicos negros que llegaban del delta del Misisipi necesitaban amplificar su sonido para tapar el ruido de las fábricas. Con Muddy Waters y su guitarra eléctrica como estandarte, y Willie Dixon componiendo en las sombras, Chess le dio volumen al blues rural. Sin este catálogo áspero y directo, grabado en el 2120 de Michigan Avenue, el rock inglés no habría existido.
