Gilles Peterson fundó Brownswood en 2006 para darle salida a los demos que le mandaban a su programa de la BBC. Mientras la industria tradicional se achicaba, él editó el jazz de cámara de Elan Mehler y el soul electrónico de Ben Westbeech. No había un plan comercial, sino una antena atenta al pulso de la calle. El sello terminó siendo el catalizador del nuevo jazz británico, cruzando la pista de baile con la herencia diaspórica. Más que un catálogo, es un mapa de cómo suena el mundo cuando se lo deja mezclarse.
