Antes de sacudir la industria con los discos económicos de Naxos, el alemán Klaus Heymann fundó Marco Polo en 1982 con una obsesión: grabar lo que nadie más quería grabar. En lugar de registrar otra versión de las sinfonías de Beethoven, el sello se dedicó a rastrear partituras olvidadas del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Su catálogo se convirtió en un refugio para compositores postergados como Havergal Brian o Joachim Raff. No era nostalgia; era la convicción de que la historia de la música es demasiado ancha para limitarse al canon.
