Matthew Halsall fundó Gondwana en 2008 con mil libras que ahorró trabajando en Ticketmaster, buscando un espacio para el jazz meditativo de Manchester que Londres ignoraba. El sello se convirtió en el refugio de un sonido de cámara, donde el jazz modal dialoga con la electrónica de Warp y el minimalismo clásico. El debut de GoGo Penguin con Fanfares en 2012 demostró que el género podía prescindir de la nostalgia y sonar en clubes. Gondwana importa porque descentralizó la escena británica, probando que la calma también tiene su propio pulso.
