American jazz bassist and cellist, nicknamed "The Bear". He was (along with Oscar Pettiford) probably the first bassist to record pizzicato jazz cello. he is also well-known for his experimental blends of jazz and Brazilian music. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Babasin freelanced for radio and television and served as a session player.
